Average message size should include headers and record overhead if those are stored. Replication increases physical storage; indexes, transaction logs, safety margins and temporary rebalancing require additional capacity.
Retention should reflect replay, recovery, audit and consumer needs—not an arbitrary maximum. Longer retention also increases governance and sensitive-data obligations.
